We all have stories that we tell ourselves about why we cannot stop smoking right now. Perhaps we are going through an emotional situation, or we just started a new job, or we are planning a vacation, or we don’t have enough will power, or we simply don’t want to give up the pleasure of smoking. The truth is all of our stories are cover ups for the real reason we have not quit smoking. The real reason we have not stopped smoking is that we have not reached our maximum pain level.
Your Quit Smoking Pain Level!
It is only when a smoker comes face to face with a real life harmful situation, that he/she, wakes up and realizes that the pleasure of smoking is no longer worth the pain associated with it. Sometimes the pain is a medical checkup that reveals a serious health condition, sometimes the pain is a financial strain on the family budget, and sometimes the pain is the realization that smoking is no longer socially attractive or acceptable and he/she makes a decision to quit smoking.
Then there is the pain that smokers inflict on their own family members and associates at work by subjecting them to second hand smoke. Of course, an addicted smoker who is trying to avoid quitting smoking will argue that second hand smoke is not really harmful and will search for stories that backup his/her opinion.
Here are the true facts as presented by the University of Minnesota tobacco research division.
Secondhand smoke, also known as passive or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), is a combination of:
- Mainstream smoke: exhaled by smokers
- Sidestream smoke: given off by the burning end of a cigarette, cigar, or pipe
Between 70% and 90% of non-smokers in the American population, children and adults, are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke. It is estimated that only 15% of cigarette smoke gets inhaled by the smoker. The remaining 85% lingers in the air for everyone to breathe. If a person spends more than two hours in a room where someone is smoking, the nonsmoker inhales the equivalent of four cigarettes. Secondhand smoke is the third leading preventable cause of disability and early death (after active smoking and alcohol) in the United States. For every eight smokers who die from smoking, one innocent bystander dies from secondhand smoke. To read the full story go here.. http://www1.umn.edu/perio/tobacco/secondhandsmoke.html
